Largest Clinical Study of XyliMelts® Shows Significant Relief for Dry Mouth While Sleeping

A study recently published in Clinical Oral Investigations (DOI: 10.1007/s00784-026-06798-8) evaluates the efficacy of XyliMelts® (mucoadhesive xylitol discs) for treating nocturnal xerostomia (nighttime dry mouth) in patients who underwent radiation therapy for head and neck cancer.

The study found that XyliMelts® significantly outperformed water in reducing the subjective burden of dry mouth and improving sleep quality:

• Superior Relief: 76% of patients reported superior dry mouth relief with the discs, compared to only 24% with water ($p < 0.001$).
• Improved Sleep: 66.7% of patients stopped waking up at night due to dry mouth when using the discs, while only 9.1% achieved this with water ($p < 0.001$).
• Reduced Thirst: 70% of participants reported a reduced need to drink overnight with the discs, compared to 20% with water.
• Quality of Life: 57.6% of patients reported an improved quality of life compared to 20% with water.
• Objective Salivary Flow: Interestingly, the study observed no changes in objective salivary flow parameters, suggesting that the benefits are primarily related to sustained moisture and lubrication rather than physiological stimulation of the glands.
• Tolerability: The product was very well tolerated, with 98.4% of patients rating it as safe and 70% expressing a willingness to continue long-term use.

Conclusion

The researchers concluded that topical mucoadhesive discs provide a simple, effective, and well-tolerated solution for managing nocturnal dry mouth in cancer survivors, especially when biological recovery of salivary glands is limited.
